Types of volunteering
Volunteering your professional expertise is high impact, because your professional skills can make a huge difference to charities. Non-profits are often under-staffed and under-resourced, so having a professional volunteer their time can be extremely valuable. At the same time, there are many benefits to you, both professionally and personally.
If you work in the ICT industry, you can take advantage of regular Skills Exchange events run by Telco Together in Melbourne and Sydney. These events feature charities pitching a small technical problem to a roomful of enthusiastic staff from the telco/ICT sector, who then volunteer 1-2 days to help solve the issue. Many companies incorporate team based volunteering as part of their Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) approach. You might find yourself helping serve lunches or preparing food hampers for those in need, sorting clothes at an op shop, gardening or painting a shelter for the homeless.
If your employer is a member of Telco Together, we can work with them to implement a calendar of volunteer events for your workplace. Contact Telco Together for more information. Many employers offer 1-2 days volunteering leave per year, so check with your HR department.
