Telco Together successfully hosted its inaugural Skills Exchange event yesterday afternoon in Melbourne, bringing together 25 skilled professionals from the ITC industry with various charities, to help problem solve information and communications technology challenges faced by charities.

Proceedings kicked off with eight charities presenting a three minute pitch to the room of ICT specialist volunteers from companies including Elabor8, Cisco Australia, Vocus Communications, Telstra and more. Each charity was tasked with summarising their organisation’s purpose as well as a particular information and communications technology challenge currently faced. The room then transitioned into a networking event, with ICT specialists and charities mingling and matching with the aim of resolving respective problems highlighted and/or formulating agreements for additional assistance where required.

Commenting on the success of the event, Renee Bowker, CEO of Telco Together Foundation said;

“ We are always looking for new opportunities to enable telco resources and technology to help make a positive social contribution and the idea of matching skilled volunteers with charities has been on our agenda for some time.

“I am thrilled with the outcome of our first skills exchange event which exceeded all expectations, providing a truly unique and valued exchange for both our skilled volunteers and the participating charities, seeking support,” said Ms Bowker.

Participating charities included Red Dust Role Models, Asylum Seekers Resource Centre, Huntington Foundation Victoria, Plan International Australia, Gawler Foundation, Heartkids, Deaf Children and Australian Council for Educational Research.

It's terrific to walk into a room, pitch your project and know that everyone listening wants to be there and wants to help. I made some great speed date connections, that I hope will turn into mutually beneficial long term relationships. Thanks Telco Together for the opportunity.”
Lisa Norris
Senior Project Director - Executive Producer, Australian Council for Educational Research

“It was great to be able to present some of the IT and communications challenges we face as a small charity with a room full of experts in the field. We had some follow up discussions about possible solutions to our problems and we are really grateful for the opportunity to work with some passionate people that have some of the specific skills we lack as a small organisation. Thanks again Telco Together for putting the Skills Exchange together, we look like benefiting greatly from the initiative."

CEO Red Dust Role Models

“Attending the Telco Together Skills Exchange has made an immediate positive impact to our organisations IT challenges. I would highly recommend this event to other charities who require IT help.”

About The Skills Exchange Event Series

This new match-making style event created by Telco Together and kindly hosted by Elabor8, was the first in a series of Skills Exchange events to be held over the coming months in both Melbourne and Sydney. The theme of the afternoon workshop was information and communications technology challenges faced by charities, with future Skills Exchange events set to be themed around other common problem areas faced by charities areas.

Our Skills Exchange series of events was created in response to the Foundation’s Charity Insights research findings, conducted across the not for profit industry in 2015.
